Recently, I just spent sometime with my father and we were talking about my half brother who is highly functioning autistic. Like most kids with autism, my brother Konner delivers blunt, yet priceless responses due to the fact he doesn’t have the filters/pressures of being politically correct.
My father said Konner gave the best answer when my father told him he loved him last week. My father came home from work, gave Konner a hug, and then said “I missed you when I was at work today, I love you Konner”. Konner took a minute to process my father’s message and then responded “I know Dad, thank you”. It doesn’t seem like much, but he really hit the nail on the head with that response.
You see, when most of us say “I love you” to someone, we are soliciting a response, we want them to day I love you back. If you really do love someone, the best answer is “I know” or “thank you”. After hearing Konner’s response, he then asked “How do you know I love you, Konner?”. He replied, “Well you tell me a lot and you do nice things for me, so I can tell you do”.
I find this reaction refreshing and changes how I view saying or hearing I love you from now on. With today being the holiday most associated with that phrase, keep that response in mind, hell maybe even use it and see how they react.
